To ensure the stem cell sector in Australia continues to grow and remain internationally competitive, skills and training remain a strong focus of the Australian Stem Cell Centre (ASCC).

The ASCC offers Supplementary Scholarships to postgraduate students of high calibre. In addition to this the Centre provides International Travel Awards on a competitive basis to Australian students and junior postdoctoral researchers to present their work at national and international conferences as well as visit international laboratories.

The Centre is also committed to training scientists in basic research techniques involving hESC and iPS cells.  The ASCC offers Pluripotent Stem Cell Training Workshops at our laboratories in Queensland and Victoria under the tuition of expert stem cell researchers. These workshops provide hands-on, laboratory-based training accompanied by a series of lectures over a four day period.

In addition to the Pluripotent Stem Cell Training Workshops, in 2009/10, we will offer Advanced Traineeships in Pluripotent Stem Cell Biology. These traineeships will allow researchers to be placed within our laboratories for an extended period (one to six months) to greatly enhance their technical proficiency in manipulating pluripotent stem cells. This may be for a specific project (such as generating individual hESC reporter lines or iPS cells), or to assist in the introduction of state of the art stem cell technology at their home research institute or company.
