StemCore is entering an exciting new phase. Established by the Australian Stem Cell Centre, from 1 July 2011 Stem Core has been transferred to Stem Cells Limited, a company owned by Monash University and the University of Queensland, who will continue to develop the facility. With these two universities' support, in conjunction with funding from the Australian Government, StemCore will continue to operate as an independent entity.

Pluripotent stem cells, and in particular human ES cells, are typically demanding to propagate and require specific expertise to be cultured successfully. Currently, the requirements of Australian research groups for the supply of pluripotent stem cells are predominantly catered for by an uncoordinated network of multiple in-house cell culture laboratories.

StemCore underpins stem cell research in Australia via the provision of pluripotent stem cell products, services and training. Utilising specialist expertise and infrastructure StemCore allows research laboratories to increase their efficiencies and outputs through outsourcing of commonplace or specialised activities.

StemCore operates two core laboratories, located at Monash University (Victoria) and the University of Queensland (Queensland). These state of the art laboratories are operated by teams experienced in the production and quality control of pluripotent stem cells.

Cell Line Provision and Related Services

StemCore provides a range of human embryonic stem cell lines (ES cells) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), as well as human or mouse feeder cells. These cell types are available in multiple product formats including feeder free and serum free conditions. Products and services include:
  • ready-to-experiment cultures of hESC, iPS and feeder cell lines
  • expansion and banking of customer supplied cell lines
  • cell line characterisation
  • differentiated stem cell products
  • reagent batch testing
  • other custom services developed to meet customers requirements.

iPS Cell Service

To cater for the dramatic increase in demand for the development of new iPS cell lines, the StemCore iPS Service offers services for scientists interested in working in this new field of stem cell research, including:
  • custom generation of iPS cell lines
  • multiple state-of-the-art techniques available
  • characterisation and master banking of new lines
  • option of continued provision of iPS cell line cultures.

Training

StemCore offers laboratory based training for investigators wanting to learn fundamental aspects of pluripotent stem cell culture and analysis.

Current and planned training options include:
  • pluripotent stem cell workshops providing hands on laboratory-based training accompanied by a series of lectures
  • new in depth theoretical and practical training courses on specific subjects including derivation and propagation of iPS cells and differentiation of pluripotent stem cells
  • advanced Traineeships that offer a unique opportunity for training in specific aspects of stem cell biology over an extended period of time
  • iPS cell workshops is aimed at giving participants both practical experience with generation, identification and analysis of iPS cells and to provide theoretical background of the fast developing field of iPS cell research.
