The development could have wide-ranging benefits for the understanding and treatment of kidney disease, in particular genetic kidney disease.
The team that made the cells was led by Associate Professor Sharon Ricardo of Monash University along with Professor Claude Bernard, Monash University, Dr Andrew Laslett, CSIRO and Dr Peter Kerr of the Monash Medical Centre.
Dr Ricardo said “this research is a critical stepping stone for the development of iPS cells from patients with genetic kidney disease which is one of the most common life threatening genetic conditions”.
There is currently no treatment to prevent or slow genetically based kidney disease such as polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
