Postgraduate Supplementary Scholarships

The ASCC is committed to continuing to support high quality postgraduate students in the field of stem cell research in Australia. This scheme aims to attract and retain high calibre postgraduate students through the provision of supplementary scholarships to candidates who have received a competitive postgraduate scholarship for their studies in the stem cell field.

Eligibility

The candidate must be enrolled for a higher degree in stem cell field at an Australian education institution.

The candidate must have applied for and have been awarded a full Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent postgraduate research scholarship for their research project.

Candidates may be from any Australian laboratory including those not directly funded by the ASCC and may have already commenced their candidature.

Applications must be supported by the candidate’s supervisor/s and all supervisory arrangement must be consistent with the regulations of the enrolling institution.

Duration and Amount

ASCC will provide $6,000 per annum to successful candidates for up to three years with a possible six month pro-rata extension. Such an extension is conditional on an approved extension of tenure of the candidate’s APA or equivalent scholarship.

Scholarship payments will begin once the candidate has confirmed his/her enrolment with his/her institution and study has commenced. For existing students, payment will commence from January 2010.

The ASCC will award a maximum of 20 scholarships.

Terms of Support

The scholarship must be activated by June 2010 and cannot be transferred to another university or institution without written permission of the ASCC.

The scholarship holder must:
  • remain an enrolled student
  • make satisfactory progress as assessed by their supervisor/s and enrolling institute
  • assign intellectual property to the enrolling institution and must comply with the rules and policies of the enrolling institute
  • provide the ASCC with an annual progress report
  • attend ASCC workshops and training programs as requested
  • acknowledge the ASCC’s support in publications, presentations and posters by correctly displaying the ASCC logo.

Application Procedure

To apply for an ASCC Supplementary Scholarship, candidates must complete the application form and submit to ASCC via email by the due date - download the application form.

Please email completed applications to the ASCC as a combined (single) PDF document to students@stemcellcentre.edu.au no later than 21 December 2009.

Assessment

The ASCC Scientific Director, in conjunction with the ASCC Senior Scientific Faculty, will review applications and make a recommendation to ASCC management regarding suitable candidates. In making this decision, the following factors will be considered:
  • academic merit
  • endorsement of their project by supervisor/s.

Notification

Applicants will be notified by email in January 2010.
