The ASCC is committed to international collaboration and to extend the concept of national research and training networks internationally through its ongoing involvement in many supranational activities and forums including the International Consortium of Stem Cell Networks (ICSCN) and the Stem Cell Network Asia Pacific (SNAP). ASCC recognises that international co-operation in the stem cell field rests on the development of a strong culture of international collaboration at the all levels including graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
The ASCC International Travel Awards will:
- Provide career development for early career researchers
- Build future international collaborations
- Ensure sustainability of the Australian stem cell research sector
- Ensure international competitiveness
- Build a skilled stem cell workforce
The ASCC International Travel Awards provide financial support for PhD Students and early career postdoctoral fellows in Australia to present their research at international meetings and associated laboratory visits and seminars.
In 2010 approximately five awards, each of ~$2,000, will be made available. Applicants may be from any part of Australia and need not be currently funded by the ASCC, nor working on an ASCC-funded project.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be either post-doctoral fellows within five years of completion of PhD; or PhD candidates, working in the stem cell field in Australia.
- Applicants must have submitted an abstract for a poster or presentation at the meeting they are applying for the travel award to attend.
- Applicants must have applied for a travel grant from the meeting organisers (where available).
- Applicants must submit a plan of laboratory visits and seminars before or after attendance at the designated meeting.
- Applicants may be from any Australian laboratory including those not directly funded by the ASCC but must be working in the stem cell field.
Terms of Support
ASCC will provide up to $2000 towards the costs of travel, accommodation, and meals to attend the designated meeting and to participate in laboratory visits and seminars.
The conference and travel must be completed before June 30 2011.
The recipient is responsible for securing additional funding to cover the total cost of the trip.
Reporting and Communications Requirements
By accepting an ASCC International Travel Award, the recipient agrees to the following reporting requirements:
- Recipients of this award agree to provide the ASCC a copy of their poster or presentation and with a brief report describing their trip and the value of the training and networking opportunities made available through the ASCC International Travel Award. This information may be used at the ASCC’s discretion, including on its website.
- The recipient will also provide a short financial report detailing how the ASCC funds were expended and any provide details of other travel grants secured.Application Procedure
Application Procedure
Email the following documents as a single PDF (preferably) or Word document with a table of contents including your full contact details to science@stemcellcentre.edu.au by 30 July 2010 with INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL GRANT APPLICATION JULY 2010 as the email subject heading:
- The abstract for the poster or presentation submitted to the conference and include the title, authors, institution name and address at the top. Provide any grant acknowledgements for your research at the end of your abstract.
- A personal statement (<300 words) indicating how this award would promote international collaboration that would benefit your current research and the development of your independent research career.
- A succinct itinerary of your trip including the conference program and intended plan of lab visits.
- Details of other travel grants applied for, if any.
- Your CV (no page limit).
- A signed letter of support from the Principal Investigator of your current research project
Assessment
Applicants abstracts will be ranked by the conference organisers (where possible), and/or the ASCC Scientific Director.
The final decision will rest with the Scientific Director of the ASCC.

Applicants will be notified by email by 20 August 2010
